to be more accurate - anti these guns

The type that can be full-auto

or semi-auto

or large caliber

Full-auto is highly regulated at the federal level and illegal in several states. A full-auto license requires rigorous background checks and sign-off from local law enforcement.

Semi-auto is extremely common and has been in use in the US for over a century.

The .223 (5.56MM) round used in the AR-15 is considered an intermediate caliber, not a large caliber. One of the design goals for that rifle was to enable the soldier to carry more rounds on his person due to the smaller size and lighter weight of the round.
