The tipping point is here, lol [View all]

In the week of Nov. 30, 2015, OSBI received 604 applications. Two months later, in the week of Jan. 25, 2016, OSBI received 1,434, more than double that received only weeks earlier, according to a release from the agency.

"The reasoning for this increase is a matter of opinion since the application does not ask for a reason for applying for the license," officials state in the release. "However, during this time frame several sheriffs across the state waived their $25 fingerprinting fee and encouraged their citizens to apply for a license as a means of personal protection."

The agency said the actions by some sheriff's "could certainly have had an effect on the amount of applications received by the Bureau."

Garfield County Sheriff Jerry Niles said his office has seen a similar increase in interest in gun permits.
