I would say that if you have a child in the house then you should secure anything that might cause harm. Easy enough to secure cabinets or put chemicals where they can't be reached, and I don't think a loaded weapon should ever be accessible to children. Lock it, leave it unloaded, whatever, but don't stick a loaded gun under a pillow.
