To only load 28 rounds instead of 30. I and most I know topped off the full thirty without any problems.

I never saw a drum magazine in the military. I did have a friend who bought a 50 round drum cheap off another guy. It was considered a success if it only jammed 3-4 times. He tossed it in a box after trying it several times with the same result. 30 years later it is still probably in that box in his basement.

Some other guys tried taping two 30 round magazines together to flip for reloading. They gave that up quickly, misfeeds were common.

In FAST there were clips to attach 3 magazines for MP5 SMGs side by side. Misfeeds were not a big issue but it was just awkward and more trouble than it was worth.
