(126,683 posts)If you follow a group of children from birth to age 12, taking into account the risk of accidental firearm death each year, about 11 per million will die in that time from an accidental firearm injury. The risk is rather low until age 2, then increases until children start attending kindergarten and elementary school, at which point it drops substantially until the children reach about age 10. After age 11, the risk rises substantially every year: if you follow a group of children from birth to age 17, taking into account the risk of accidental firearm death each year, about 25 per million will die in that time from an accidental firearm injury
The numbers for all firearms deaths are much higher, of course. If you follow a group of children from birth to age 12, taking into account the risk of firearm death each year, about 47 per million will die in that time from a firearm injury. This risk also increases until children start attending kindergarten and elementary school, then drops substantially until the children reach about age 10. Again, after age 11, the risk rises substantially every year: if you follow a group of children from birth to age 17, taking into account the risk of firearm death each year, about 189 per million will die in that time from a firearm injury
