(15,440 posts)See, white privilege is insidious because you're right - if you are white, you don't really see it until it's pointed out to you. I understand as much as a 56 year old white male can about white privilege, and I try to be aware. But the truth is that I will never really know because I'm not you.
This is why you need to stay. You know, and can keep reminding people. It took me years even to see it. And it took even more years before I realized that by getting rid of that white privilege I would not lose anything I had before. Because I won't. It isn't a zero sum game, you know - I don't have to lose in order for you to win. If we succeed in getting to a place where we can judge each other by our character instead of our skin color, everyone will actually win.
Because this isn't really us hating one another. It is us being manipulated by the 1/10 of 1% or the big capitalists or the economic royalists - whatever you want to call them - into hating each other, or at least having an unhealthy mistrust. Because those people really calling the shots know that if they can get us to mistrust or even hate one another, then we will be too busy doing that to realize that both our pockets are being picked.
So stick around. But if you don't, good luck to you, because I know you're a guy just like me trying to make his way in the world. If we all realized that, and respected each other for that, then white privilege would disappear.
Of course, we both need to work on awareness of male privilege now...
