. . . but it sounds like these quotes are attempts to relate and interact. I can think of much worse ambitions.

Don't these misunderstandings occur between many different cultures, groups, religions, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, etc.?

I'd favor the interaction, itself, over most slights -- if it's sincere and friendly.
