He adopted his first wife's two boys (her first husband wasn't too swift) and always regarded them as his own. They feel the same way, from all reports. His wife used to support charities including orphanages overseas, which led to the adoption of their daughter Bridget (who was in need of significant medical care, apparently) from Bangladesh:

I honestly don't think McCain's a racist. I think he's a bitter old dude, and I think he was much more effective when he wasn't putting up with Teapublican bullshit about immigration and other "Rile 'em up" issues, and was actually playing his little "Maverick" card, and griping about pork barrel spending. That was a long time ago, though.
Of course, anyone who is still in the Republican Party is putting up with that Tea Party - Crazy Talk - Hater shit. As so many point out, even Reagan would be a Democrat (again) in this environment. He'd be way over in the conservative corner of the Big Tent, but he was one of those guys who didn't want to screw with Social Security--that would make him an enemy of the GOP, right there.
But there IS a SCANDAL in that wedding picture.....a HUGE one!!

McCain may never live that down the next time he's having drinks at the Army - Navy Club!!
