Cases: Dred Scott v Sanford 1857
Butler v Perry 1916
Jones v Alfred H. Mayer Co 1968
Memphis v Greene 1981

Provisions in the Original Constitution: Article 1, Section 2(Slaves count as 3/5 a person)
Article 1, Section 9, clause 1 (No power to ban slavery until 1808 in any State)
Article IV, Section 2 (free States cannot protect slaves)

Fugitive Slave Act !850, where the Supreme Court upheld the holding of slaves who had no legal right to escape and any person seeing them, could arrest, hold or hang them depending on circumstances. . Although these human beings being valuable property usually were either sold again or returned to original 'owners'.

Then came the 13th Amendment passed by Congress January 1865, ratified Dec. 1865.
