This memento, we believe, will inspire us to assert man's decency and goodness through an understanding of anguish.

....

As we view this collection and think about the period in history which led to its creation, may we pledge to ourselves and our posterity, the kind of sincere activity and personal witnessing which will put these tragedies behind us as we move together toward the kind of America which is our heritage. We shall overcome.
