Your views aren't controversial. You are, however, an African American woman and speak from that perspective. Some find that POV unacceptable.
My views aren't controversial either. I'm pretty middle of the road in terms of my views on gender and race. But the fact is there are a number of people who have ever had to listen to the POV of anyone other that people just like them. They see any suggestion that racism or sexism exists anywhere but within Republican circles as an outrage. We even have folks who defend MRAs, which the Southern Poverty Law Center keeps track of under its Hate Watch project, over feminists and insist it is feminists rather than MRAs that "make DU suck." People are comfortable talking about racism only if they can point the finger at the GOP and never have to examine their own role in the system. While there is no question that the GOP is far more racist and sexist in national policy, on a personal level the differences are not as great as we might hope.
You may not be radical, but you are cute.
