I am white as well and live in the south. I grew up in France (american mother, french father). It is shocking how many older or middle aged white people will make overtly racist or disparaging remarks when they think you will agree with them and only white people are in the room. I could not believe it at first.

The only positive thing is that I do not see this behavior amongst younger people very often.
