Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Union Rags has been retired due to the suspensory injury he suffered earlier this month.
There is no stud deal yet in place for the three-year-old Dixie Union colt.
"No decision has been reached on that," Russell Jones, a bloodstock adviser to owner Phyllis Wyeth, told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I don't know what the numbers might look like. I do know she's made the decision to go forward with this decision for the rest of his life."
Union Rags had breezed twice at Fair Hill Training Center since his Belmont victory on June 9, most recently covering five furlongs in a bullet 1:00.60 on July 6. Although he was "100% sound" following the work, according to Kathy Anderson, D.V.M., Union Rags had some minor filling in his left foreleg after returning from exercising on the morning of July 10. An ultrasound revealed a small lesion on his high suspensory ligament, which is believed to have occurred during his most recent breeze.
