In reply to the discussion: Official U.S. Open Tennis Thread! [View all]and I think for the first time last night I realized how much I am going to miss him when he retires.
His attitude, his demeanor, his love of the sport and sense of the game is not something as easily visible in other players. I don't know, it just makes me attached more to him and his outcome. I felt that way about Agassi but mainly because of watching him change as a person during all his time on the court and his school that he set up. So in addition to the beauty of their game play they shine through as humans.
I love to watch the others. I find Monfils a blast to watch. I adored Justine Henin, her game was like Feds, like ballet almost. I would adore seeing Venus win another Wimbledon, she seems such a gracious person and her excitement always makes me smile. I had slowly come to really respect the oddity that was Marion Bartoli and cheered like mad when she won only to see her retire
. Still, no one seems to even come close to my attachment to the Fed Express.
I find it odd because mostly I find professional sports to be tedious and stupid. It is probably the individual nature of this sport that really connects you with that singular person, I don't know. Like boxing. I DO strangely like that sport too but won't watch it ever again.
Anyway, sorry about the rambling. GO FED EXPRESS!
