and because of his college football recruitment and his choice of college. He was heavily recruited by some big name powerhouse football schools, but he ultimately decided to stay closer home and chose Cal. Cal is a great academic school, but it is obviously not a big name football school for someone of his talent.

That's what I remember about him during that period. He got a lot of bad press because he declined schools like USC who was No. 1 in rankings for about 3 years straight during the time he was recruited. If I remember correctly, he got pissed at having to answer questions about his college choice, and I guess it stuck with him.
