Ya wanna know why Phil Knight fluffed Joe Paterno? [View all]
Here's the fluff:
Commenting on those events, Knight said, "it turns out (Paterno) gave full disclosure to his superiors, information that went up the chains to the head of the campus police and the president of the school. The matter was in the hands of a world-class university, and by a president with an outstanding national reputation."
Knight added, "...this much is clear to me. If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno."

Here's the reason:
The swoosh is practically Penn State's secondary logo.
Nike's signature emblem is embroidered on every Nittany Lion uniform, screened on banners lining Jeffery Field and stitched on the apparel of thousands of fans who pack Beaver Stadium on football Saturdays.
<snip>
In 1996 Penn State signed an undisclosed contract with Nike -- reported to be four years, $2.6 million -- which involves advertising and marketing considerations. It also requires all Penn State athletes to wear only the company's apparel. The contract has since been renewed.
