Cubs finish investigation of racist hand gesture on TV, ban fan from Wrigley

By Satchel Price and Madeline Kenney

The Cubs have concluded their investigation of an incident in which a fan sitting behind NBC Sports Chicago reporter Doug Glanville “more likely than not” used a racist gesture on air Tuesday night.

The fan used the gesture while Glanville, who is black, was making an on-air report during the Cubs’ 5-2 win over the Marlins. It’s been associated with white nationalists and right-wing trolls in recent years.

Team president of business operations Crane Kenney, who first sent a press release hours after the game stating the team was looking into the incident, said team has found the gesture racially motivated. The Cubs haven’t been able to reach the fan after multiple attempts, but they’ve sent him a letter notifying him of the team’s decision to indefinitely ban him from Wrigley Field.

“The long-standing Chicago Cubs Guest Code of Conduct is in place to ensure a safe, comfortable and enjoyable environment for all fans and prohibits unacceptable behavior,” Kenney said in a statement. “After a review of last night’s broadcast footage, we concluded this individual’s actions violated the Guest Code of Conduct.

“As a result, after repeated attempts to reach this individual by phone, we sent a letter to the individual notifying him of our findings and our decision that, effectively immediately, he will not be permitted on the grounds of Wrigley Field or other ticketed areas indefinitely. We further communicated if he attempts to enter Wrigley Field or other ticketed areas he may be subject to prosecution for criminal trespass to property.
