Troy Tulowitzki announced his retirement on Thursday, bringing an end to a career that was often brilliant before injuries derailed it.

Tulowitzki signed with the Yankees in January, taking one more shot at resurrecting his career. But he appeared in just five games before going on the injured list with a left calf strain on April 4. Tulowitzki went on a Minor League rehab assignment at the end of April, but that lasted just two games before the 34-year-old experienced a setback.

Tulowitzki officially ended the comeback attempt on Thursday, releasing a statement that began: “I wanted to take this opportunity to announce my retirement as a Major League Baseball player.

Unfortunately for Tulowitzki, the injuries were relentless. Going back to 2008, he was placed on the injured list a dozen different times, with an array of maladies. In recent years, he struggled with quad strains, a sprained ankle, bone spurs in his heel and the calf strain.

Wow ... Tulo was a one-man wrecking crew when he played against S.F. Well, actually part of a two-man wrecking crew when paired with Carlos Gonzalez. That was a scary duo to play against -- but fun to watch.
