When they played, passing was much more difficult because the defense was allowed to do everything short of skull-fucking the receivers on a pass play. Plus, the "west-coast offense" was nothing more than the offensive playbook Paul Brown was using in Cleveland (Bill Walsh learned it from Brown, by the way, it should be called the "Ohio offense&quot . You can't compare passing stats from back then to now very well without accounting for a lot of things.
