Vulture populations crashed drastically in India a few years ago. The culprit was something being given to cattle (an antibiotic, I think - though it could have been something else). It turned out to be highly toxic to vultures. So it was banned. Farmers who'd used it dumped their stock in local rivers, where it caused a mass die-off of endangered gharials.
