A lot of the time the birds are just stunned and I've learned to give them plenty of time to pull themselves together. If a bird has crashed into a window and become stunned because of a hawk, I go outside and either stand guard or set up a little safety area and try to chase the hawk away. I'm adding this because once I had a bird that I thought for certain was deceased and went out to place it in a bag and it jumped up and flew away. I swear, to my eye it wasn't even breathing. But it was okay.

Larger birds like doves don't do as well, but oftentimes the smaller birds will recover and fly off.

EDIT: If it's a bird that the hawk is pursuing, it's likely to carry the bird off before you can even react. You can tell if it's a hawk if it's dead silent and there are no birds out in the yard after you hear the bang.
