The sun was very low in the sky when it happened, I wonder if there were some strange reflections from our neighbours conservatory.

In 7 years of living here in the U.K. (Northern Cotswolds) we've never had a bird strike.

Had one young blackbird decide to come in the house and take a perch on our bookcase. One squab wood pigeon in the shed. And a blue tit that flew in the upstairs bathroom window. All instances, resolved with healthy birds back outside.
