My general impression however is that atheists are not persecuted in America, but they do, in at leastsome parts of America, suffer discrimination and lack of political representation.

I live in NY so I don't se it here but I am sure in many rural areas Atheists get discriminated

The privileged rarely persecute their own, let alone for disagreeing on religious beliefs.
