(7,796 posts)Presuming, for a moment, that "theological analysis" isn't actually an oxymoron.... The only thing it can mean is "interpreting some bit of writing by making ad hoc arguments to reconcile it to some shit we, for any variety of reasons, very much want to believe."
So long as we can leave it to nerds to play in their basement, the theological analyzers can play dungeon master all they like. Till that day comes, and stays for good, then, yeah. I guess I'm "opposed to it." Because "it" is nothing more, or less, than a thick layer of bullshit which can do nothing whatsoever other than provide cover for whatever it is they wanted to think in the first place. And that works just as well for the bad guys as for the good guys. A problem particular to the bible (though by no means exclusive to it) is that the game is already rigged in favor of the bad guys. If you give the bible authority over anything at all, the bad guys get to start with a massive advantage in materiel.
Of course, I could just as well say regarding the "theological analysis of other ancient documents" bit... what in holy hell do you imagine that silly comment actually has to do with anything whatsoever on this topic? Or... how about "nope. I'm entirely in favor of applying theological analysis to ancient Sumerian tax documents."
