and, honestly, unfounded might also describe a belief in quantum mechanics. People have been told that quantum behaviour governs the workings of modern electronic components but, as far as they know, it could actually be microscopic demons with cleft sticks.

I have been lucky enough to have performed experiments demonstrating the reality of quantum effects that provide a more reasonable and well founded explanation than cooperative demons.
