I think it's a valid question. JFK stated publically that he would not take orders from the pope, which was not as crazy a concern in those days as it would be now.

Romney should make the same statement to serve his country before his religion.

Of course, Mormons are allowed to lie to non-Mormons if it's in the interest of their religion, so even such a statement would have to be taken with a large dose of salt.
