(146,218 posts)44. I saw an interesting documentary on the religious beliefs of African American slaves.
They really had incentive to believe that there was something better than this on the other side. There was other way to make sense of it and it gave them hope and the will to go on. For them, it wasn't about control really, it was about salvation.
The growth of the nones is a fascinating phenomenon and may bode well for progressive values in general. It seems that many are disillusioned with the religious right's political agenda, but have not give up their belief in god or their "spirituality". They will hopefully explore options that are more liberal and progressive.
