2. "God is dead" was a social observation.

He didn't think people were basing their everyday decisions and morality on scripture, so people had to become their own gods and create their own morality.

That was my take on that proclamation, but I have not read everything Nietzsche wrote, and I know he was loosing it toward the end, so there could discrepancies in this writings.
