I believe different gods represent different archetypes found across all cultures as explained by Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung.

Catholics have patron saints to pray to for particular needs. Hindus say you can pick out your favorite god or goddess to worship that is called an "Ishta Devata". Devas are spirits. Hindus also say there is one god, but all those gods and goddesses are aspects of the one god that is too vast to comprehend.

This concept makes a lot of sense to me.
