6. I think there's a good deal more to the food issue

I've always believed the the Jewish and Muslim laws regarding what and when to eat were a fundamental means of psychological and social control because eating is such a primitive, basic activity. To unplug from the national food system is to set in motion all sorts of unplugging at other levels. It means that we begin to create a paradigm of relying on the community that's closest to us. My niece, who lives in LA (Lower Alabama) just posted on her facebook page, "You know you live in a small town when the farmer at the farmer's market runs out of something and tells you where he lives so you can go pick some more for yourself." That's what we should be aiming for. I know I've already disengaged emotionally from all the crap that's coming down on a national level, and I was deeply engaged from the moment they stopped counting the chads in 2001. I'm involved now in a half dozen local organizations instead.
