...a forgotten tunnel that 80 Jews dug largely by hand...

Am I the only one who wonders if the expression is the traditional one, meaning manual labor, or if it is to be taken literally in that they used their hands to claw away dirt? I am guessing it is the former, but given the time and the desperation, I still wonder if the latter may not be as true.
