2. Is there an order of magnitude estimate of how many gigaflop-hrs are needed to do such calculations?

Considering all the nuclear explosions that have been simulated in supercomputers, and that QM simulations of solids are being carried out on very large chunks of lattices, it seems a little strange that no one has gotten around to doing these calculations before -- or is it just a matter of priorities ?

(BTW, I don't have access to ACS journals, so I can't get that from the articles.)
