...and we've never held our intellects in as high regard as we hold money and leisure, so there's no surprise here.

I personally don't know anyone who uses pot - or if they do I'm not aware of it - but over the years, I've seen a lot of people who are wasted in one way or another, and certainly this was true in the 60's and 70's even more so than today.

History will not forgive us, nor should it.
