The Spirograph Nebula

On April 24, 1990, the Space Shuttle Discovery carried the Hubble Space Telescope into low Earth orbit. Ten years later, on Sept. 7, 2000, Hubble captured this vibrant sight of planetary nebula IC 418, also known as the Spirograph Nebula. Located about 2,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lepus, the Spirograph Nebula displays some interesting textures and appears to peer at the viewer like a grand cosmic eye in its purple-and-orange glow.
