I got to meet Cooper at a seminar about a decade ago. Bardeen is one of the most unrecognized - from a popular science view anyway - of any scientist. His contributions with the transistor and superconductivity have, like the op said, influenced people's ives as much as anyone. Only person to win two Nobels for Physics and or Medicine.
