We are already turning more than enough atmospheric nitrogen into fertilizer to feed all humanity but we are using it carelessly which has many harmful environmental impacts in addition to the damage done by our use of natural gas in its synthesis.

Ideally very little artificially fixed nitrogen would escape human food chains. It would stay on our farms. Human poop and pee, and the poop and pee of the animals we eat, would be recycled. No excess nitrogen would be applied to farmland where it might escape into surface or groundwater.
