of my urban farm from day one.
my fave thing to teach them is that you can taste colors. when i first started i didnt even realize that my artist self was picking plants by color. those same esters that give things color are also what gives them flavor. most of the parents get this if they are beer drinkers, cuz most know about fruity esters.
giving them a bit of purple asparagus, and then a purple bean to prove to them that they are tasting purple just kills me. and their parents.

one of my most vivid childhood memories was of my da and i at the kitchen stove, tossing stuff in the fire to see what color the flames turned. a couple decades later i had a job in a metals lab, running an atomic absorbsion spectrophotometer. they expected it to take 3 mos to learn, like the dude who made more than me cuz he has a bs in biology. took me 3 days. all i had was an incomplete 2 yr pre-med degree. ya know, chemistry, physics, math. but when i complained the retired marine boss accused me of having- shadows of the mind, and wanting to bash my betters.

didnt last long in that job. the fact that i had a gift for breaking glassware because i had hidden epilepsy didnt help. but the fact that i kept getting in the shit because half the married men in my dept hung out by me half the day was what made me throw in the towel. if they had let me learn the electron microscope i might have lasted longer. but then they couldnt have justified paying the asshole more than me. cant have that.

so, when is national chemistry week?
