Physicists have long held that the breakthrough for interstellar travel would be accomplished once a civilization captures the ginormous power of a black hole, as one could travel by bending the universe rather than merely utilizing propulsion to slowly travel.

This basic concept has been observed by light being bent around the planet Jupiter because of its extremely large mass.
