1. The genome news on this is a few months old, still good to point out.

I'm sort of still stuck on skin pigmentation news, the fact that lighter pigmented folks got more vitamin D from the sun than did our darker brothers and sisters and thus we had a survival advantage in northern climates.

The interplay of Neanderthal genes in that mix is something else to add to the calculus, as are probably other genetic advantages, like higher immunity to some diseases.
