(12,132 posts)Pastor W.A. Criswell of the First Baptist Church of downtown Dallas once said that in explaining why they had set up church "branches" in black neighborhoods around Dallas.
They wanted the income but not the black bodies coming into the main sanctuary downtown. (And an impressive sanctuary it was - right in downtown Dallas, covered a few city blocks. I saw a very moving living Christmas Tree presentation there one time - of course, that was back when that kind of thing still moved me. I still like christmas music though - even religious music.)
Now, I will say I know and saw black people coming to church at FBC downtown Dallas - they weren't so coarse as to turn anyone away. But they made it pretty obvious they'd rather have you black folk attending the neighborhood branches.
When I visited the Bob Jones University campus my senior year of High School we learned they did not approve of interracial dating there. That was 30+ years ago but I bet it hasn't changed a bunch.
