That is, to say, "the last group was mostly right, here's what they got wrong and here's what they left out."

To build on your description, the Book of Mormon is basically an errata list and addendum to the New Testament.

LDS gets a bad rap as being loony tunes, but there's nothing in the Mormon scriptures that's weirder than some of the stuff in the Bible or Qur'an.
