For decades starting around the time of the Great Depression, conspiracy theorists claimed oil companies suppressed a miracle chemical innovation that would allow cars to burn ordinary water. Ironically, that is now almost slightly accurate: Fuel-cells "burn" oxygen and hydrogen, the reaction creating pollution-free water as exhaust.
