In the afternoon/evening is followed by a denser plume of smoke and hotter temps so the rain is only a very temporary relief.

Right now, you'd never know there are three mountain ranges within fifteen miles of here, I can hardly see the hills behind my neighborhood. Supposed to be +100F or more today and tomorrow.
