I'm in the Portland Oregon area and it's hot and dry, but I have family around the LA area. I'm very familiar with West Coast weather going back to the '60's.

The moisture is being pulled from Blanca by another low that developed off the California coast. Normally at this time of year if this occurred it would be a weak low and wouldn't have much moisture to work with, but it entrained the moisture from Blanca. This sort of thing wouldn't surprise me that much in late August or September, but for early June it seems very unusual.

LA (measured) at the USC campus averages 1 day of .01" or greater rainfall in June. Emphasis on the .01" as the average monthly rainfall in June is .06"

Looking at records, in May 2015 LA got more rain .93" than Portland Oregon, .59". I'm willing to bet that is very unusual.
