Vesak Day was also an important day in the past lives of Shakyamuni Buddha. As a hermit Sumedha he made his vow to free all sentient life from suffering and received confirmation from the past Buddha Dipankara. Additionally, he visited his father King Suddhodana for the first time after achieving enlightenment on Vesak Day.
