(2,987 posts)but just haven't had time to post about it. Really, I'm about to fall asleep even now but wanted you to know it was (and you are) much appreciated. I am a white mom of an adopted Asian daughter, and while we live in SF, and my daughter has only gone to school where Asian-American students are the plurality or majority (with many Asian teachers)... and she speaks Chinese fairly well (she's actually from Vietnam, but she and her Caucasian brother rebelled against VN Saturday school since they were already immersed in Mandarin during the school week, so unfortunately neither of them speak any Vietnamese, but we have developed ties with the Vietnamese community in SF and with families of children adopted from VN)... and we live in a neighborhood with a lot of Asian families (and a lot of Asian restaurants)... and she has a lot of Asian and biracial Asian/Caucasian friends... I, of course, still worry about the hateful ignorance and prejudice she may encounter, or may have already encountered but not conveyed. I also worry about whether she feels caught between two cultures (even though she seems satisfied with the mix), and I mourn what she has lost of her original culture and homeland. So, I read the letter and responses with great personal interest.
Your voice and insights and posts are important to me. I'm not a big poster (I've been at DU since 2002!), and sometimes I even forget to 'Rec', so don't take that as any measure of the value you provide!
