Because he was charismatic and was able to use humorous one-liners in the perfect situation (eg. "Sorry honey, I forgot to duck&quot , the nation fell in love with him and ignored what he was actually doing to the social safety net, amongst other things.

Other Republicans since Reagan have struggled to hide their failed policies behind the charisma and grandfatherly appeal that Reagan harnessed so masterfully.

It will not be easy finding another salesman.
