In reply to the discussion: So when Republicans call Bernie a "Communist Jew," [View all]Behind the Aegis
(55,863 posts)Will they go straight for the throat? Nope. They will be cagey and use buzzwords and innuendo. I saw it with the Cantor campaign. They will try to "court" Jews with all kinds of nonsense, including anti-Semitic tropes they will claim are only about Jews on the left (reverse of what we see sometimes from the left). They will do it through "implication" of "would you rather have a Christian or a Jew as president". I find it interesting watching some trying to dismiss instances of anti-Semitism. While certain republican candidates aren't out-right anti-Semites, it doesn't mean they aren't using anti-Semitism or making anti-Semitic remarks.
As for using "anti-Zionism" as a way to attack, with the exception of the extreme-far right and conspiracy theorists, that is more likely something we will see from the left. The evangelical base is "pro"-Israel, therefore anti-Zionism wouldn't be a winning strategy; if anything, it will be a race to make the republican candidate to look more "Jewish via support for Israel", than the actual Jew, which will create all kinds of mishegoss.
Will the republicans use anti-Semitism should Sanders be the democratic candidate? IMO, damn skippy!
