(57,936 posts)California, a translator and sometimes more than one, is standard at all civic and political events at which it is requested. Anyone who would object just does not know our society and our customs.
I am shocked that the organizers of the caucus did not prepare better. The organizers should have appointed translators and not just for Spanish well before the caucus. Shame on the Democratic Party organizers.
I can understand that the voters would want a neutral translator who had not spoken out for a specific candidate. That seems very reasonable to me.
Just asking for "a translator" and taking the first Spanish-speaking person to arrive at the stage is a stupid thing to do. I speak a couple of languages and my husband is truly bi-lingual. Translators are people trained to verify that they are translating correctly. The Democratic Party should have asked for translators trained to translate for the courts when possible.
