In reply to the discussion: As a woman who fought for gender equality in the 1970s let me define sexist for you.... [View all]Lorien
(31,935 posts)You've explained this better than I have. I've certainly faced sexism in my male dominated field, and I've fought for the right to be evaluated on the basis of my WORK, without my gender being a factor at all. That's what feminism is about: unbiased equal treatment at work and under the law. This is also what civil rights is about; a person's race, sex, and sexual orientation have no bearing on how well they can perform a job, unless that ob somehow requires egg or sperm donation, giving birth, or extraordinary upper body strength. For decades anti-feminists have been countering with "Feminism is about hating men and giving women special treatment under affirmative action!" I even had many conservative men I knew grumbling about my position at my job, saying "she wouldn't be here if it weren't for affirmative action." Hell, I had to make my resume and everything else as gender neutral as possible just to get a foot in the door. The idea that it was affirmative action that got me to that position is laughable! But Hillary supporters seem to be saying that anything less than kid gloves and special treatment is "sexist", which is bloody sexist!
